Introduction to Voice Stress Analysis

Voice Stress Analysis (VSA), originally known as Psychological Stress Evaluation (PSE), is a procedure used for detection of deception (lie detection) or truth verification or to determine psychological stress profiles.

Since its inception in the early 1970's, VSA detection-of-deception technique is now utilised throughout the world by law enforcement agencies.

Verbal responses are processed through a computer, utilizing proprietary BAKER-DVSA software. The software detects, measures, and displays certain stress-related components of the voice. Superimposed on the voice frequencies are inaudible frequency modulations (FM) whose strength and pattern relate inversely to the degree of psychological stress in the speaker at the moment of utterance.

Voice Stress is one of the ways to determine if people are deceptive in answering certain questions. The advantages are many:

· Not as time consuming or as intimidating as Polygraph
· Accurate
· Ideal as a pre-employment test
· Test of staff in the event of a robbery or other suspected crime incidence
· An immediate indication whether suspect is involved in an incident.
